Pulmonary Edema and Inflammation
نویسنده
چکیده
This monograph is concerned not so much with the immediate causes of pulmonary edema and inflammation as with an interpretation of the fundamental mechanisms involved in terms of the anatomy and physiology of the lungs. The minute structure of the lungs is evaluated from the standpoint of the elements favoring transudation and exudation into the alveolar spaces, as well as the factors opposing this tendency. The work reflects throughout the author's well-known interest in the physiology and the pathology of the lymphatic system, and its unique functions in the lung are carefully considered. The author stresses particularly the role of anoxia in bringing about alterations in the capillary permeability of the alveolar vessels, and therefore the great importance of proper oxygen therapy when pulmonary edema threatens. The monograph obviously does not aim at completeness. It represents primarily Dr. Drinker's interpretations and experimental results, rather than the many conflicting points of view in this field. The facile style of this work is in keeping with the fact that all but one of the chapters constituted a recent series of lectures presented by the author at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

Mathematical Modelling of Pulmonary Edema
The excess accumulation of water in lung interstitial or alveolar is called pulmonary edema which is caused by factors that upset the normal Starling balance in micro-circulation. Pulmonary edema disturbs the alveolar gas exchanges which are normally regulated by the respiratory system. Mathematical modelling of pulmonary edema may help to predict the lung conditions and the mechanisms involved...
متن کاملAcute Pulmonary Edema Following Administration of Magnesium Sulfate in a Pregnant Patient
Acute pulmonary edema affects 0.08% to 1.5% of women during pregnancy and during the postpartum period, and preeclampsia/eclampsia is a major obstetric cause of acute pulmonary edema. We present a case of a 23-year-old nulliparous woman who was referred to our tertiary medical center for preterm labor and dyspnea. The patient complained of having suddenly developed respiratory distress and a de...
متن کاملRole of extracellular adenosine in acute lung injury.
Acute lung injury (ALI) is a lung disease characterized by pulmonary edema and severe hypoxia. The past decade hosted a search for endogenous mechanisms controlling lung inflammation and pulmonary edema during ALI. As such, recent evidence indicates extracellular adenosine in orchestrating the resolution of pulmonary edema and inflammation during ALI.

متن کاملMechanisms of neurogenic pulmonary edema development.
Neurogenic pulmonary edema is a life-threatening complication, known for almost 100 years, but its etiopathogenesis is still not completely understood. This review summarizes current knowledge about the etiology and pathophysiology of neurogenic pulmonary edema. The roles of systemic sympathetic discharge, central nervous system trigger zones, intracranial pressure, inflammation and anesthesia ...
متن کاملCytokine-Regulation of Na+-K+-Cl− Cotransporter 1 and Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator—Potential Role in Pulmonary Inflammation and Edema Formation
Pulmonary edema, a major complication of lung injury and inflammation, is defined as accumulation of extravascular fluid in the lungs leading to impaired diffusion of respiratory gases. Lung fluid balance across the alveolar epithelial barrier protects the distal airspace from excess fluid accumulation and is mainly regulated by active sodium transport and Cl- absorption. Increased hydrostatic ...
